Walk into almost any gym and you’ll see the same thing.Someone finishes a set, checks their phone, takes a quick breath, and starts the next one 30 seconds later. Others rest five or six minutes while talking between exercises.
Neither approach is necessarily wrong—but neither is automatically right.
Rest between sets isn’t wasted time. It’s part of the training program.
Just like exercise selection, volume, intensity, and movement quality, recovery between sets determines the adaptation you’re trying to create. If the goal is maximum strength, power, speed, or muscle growth, resting too little—or too much—can reduce the effectiveness of your training.
Training Creates Fatigue. Recovery Restores Performance.
Every challenging set temporarily reduces your ability to produce force.
Your muscles fatigue. Your nervous system becomes less efficient. Energy stores are partially depleted.
The purpose of rest isn’t simply to “catch your breath.”
It’s to recover enough that the next set produces the training effect you’re actually chasing.
How much recovery you need depends on what you’re trying to improve.
Different Goals Require Different Rest Periods
Not every exercise should be performed with the same recovery time.
If you’re training muscular endurance, shorter rest periods may be appropriate because you’re intentionally challenging fatigue resistance. The body doesn’t rely on a single energy system during exercise, and understanding how those systems contribute to performance helps explain why recovery needs change depending on the goal.
If you’re trying to build maximal strength or explosive power, the goal changes completely.
Force production and power output require high-quality repetitions. Starting another set before you’ve recovered enough usually means producing less force, moving slower, and reinforcing lower-quality movement.
In other words, if every set becomes slower because you’re rushing, you’re no longer training maximum output.
You’re training fatigue.
Power Requires Freshness
Many athletes assume working harder always produces better results.
The opposite is often true when training for speed and power.
Whether you’re sprinting, jumping, throwing, or rotating a golf club, performance depends on producing force quickly—not simply becoming exhausted. For golfers, that means developing the physical qualities that create clubhead speed rather than simply trying to swing harder.
The highest-quality repetitions usually occur when adequate recovery exists between efforts.
That’s why elite power and speed training often looks different from traditional gym workouts.
The objective isn’t to leave the athlete exhausted.
The objective is to allow every repetition to be performed with maximum intent and maximum quality.
Rest Is Specific to the Exercise
A heavy squat doesn’t require the same recovery as a medicine ball throw.
Likewise, a technical balance exercise doesn’t require the same recovery as a maximal sprint.
The exercise itself, the load being used, the amount of muscle involved, and the training objective all influence how much rest is appropriate.
This is why copying someone else’s workout without understanding the reason behind it often leads to disappointing results.
The exercises may be correct.
The rest periods may not.
More Isn’t Always Better
Many people judge the quality of a workout by how tired they feel afterward.
Fatigue certainly has a place.
But fatigue should never become the goal.
The goal is adaptation.
Sometimes that requires challenging recovery.
Other times it requires allowing enough recovery to produce higher levels of force, power, speed, or movement quality.
Good coaching recognizes the difference.
There isn’t one perfect rest period for every exercise.
Heavy strength work generally requires more recovery than muscular endurance training. Explosive movements require enough recovery to maintain speed and force production. Assistance exercises often require less.
The important point isn’t memorizing a number.
It’s matching the recovery period to the objective of the exercise.
